March 20, 2020 - SEMHL Announces Co-Champions

As everyone is aware, in response to the COVID-19 (Corona Virus) pandemic,  Hockey Canada and Hockey Manitoba have cancelled all sanctioned games and programs for the remainder of the 2019-2020 hockey season.

In light of this, the SEMHL is proud to announce co-winners of the 2019-2020 League Championship. The Rocky Mountain Equipment Trophy will be awarded to both league finalists, the Warren Mercs and Portage Islanders.

The 2019-2020 playoff MVP trophy will not be awarded to one individual. Instead the league will take this opportunity to dedicate the trophy to the many volunteers that make such a difference to the game.

Wishing everyone a safe and healthy off-season and see you in October!

March 12, 2020 - SEMHL Games Canceled

Following Hockey Canada's decision to cancel all Hockey Canada-sanctioned activities due to concerns over COVID-19 (coronavirus), Hockey Manitoba has canceled all sanctioned games and programs.

Further info to follow in the coming days.

March 8, 2020 - Finals Start Tonight!

Portage heads to Warren tonight to start the best of seven SEMHL Finals. Warren swept the three game season series, outscoring Portage 17 to 11. Portage has momentum coming into the series after getting through the Survivor Series and than knocking off regular season champs, the Carman Beavers.

March 4, 2020 - It's Down To Two!

Congratulations to the Warren Mercs and the Portage Islanders as they have both moved onto the SEMHL Finals with series victories over the Carman Beavers and Altona Maroons.

The 2019/20 SEMHL Finals is scheduled as follows:

March 1, 2020 - League Awards

Congratulations go out to Remi Laurencelle and Michael St Croix of the Winkler Royals. At the Royals team windup on Friday night, the league presented Remi with the Regular Season MVP Award as well as the Rookie of the Year Award. Michael took home the SEMHL's Most Sportsmanlike Player Award.

February 21, 2020 - League Awards

The annual SEMHL awards were voted on by all seven of the teams and the presentations started last night in Carman and Warren. Congratulations to the Carman Beavers for being the regular season champs, Aaron Lewadniuk of the Beavers as the regular season scoring champion, Hayden Dola of the Warren Mercs as the SEMHL's Best Goaltender, and Dane Crowley of the Altona Maroons as the league's top defenceman.

In Altona, Dane Crowley is presented his award by Ken Steen, league statistician.

February 18, 2020 - Carman vs Portage Preview

The 1st place Carman Beavers will take on the Portage Islanders in the other SEMHL semi-finals series that starts tonight. Carman has been waiting on the sidelines with a bye while Portage moved on from the Survivor Series.

The Beavers dominated the three game season series over the Islanders winning all three, outscoring Portage 25-7 in the process. Portage will have to find a way to shutdown the Beavers top line of Lewadniuk, Owen and Dudar (12 goals and 26 points in the three games) or this series will be done in four straight.

February 14, 2020 - Warren vs Altona Preview

The second place Warren Mercs will have home ice advantage in their semi-final series against the third place Altona Maroons. Both teams should be well rested as their last games were over two weeks ago on February 1.

Warren took the season series 2-1 between these two closely matched teams winning their final two meetings 11-3 and 6-4 while dropping the first matchup in November 7-5. Augert for Altona and Lazo for Warren led their squads with eight points a piece in the three games played. This doesn't look to be a very defensive series as the teams have combined for 36 goals in the three games. Neither Altona or Warren give the opponents many powerplay opportunities so the special teams shouldn't be too big of a factor. A hot goaltender (like any other series) could/should make the difference.

February 13, 2020 - Islanders Onto Semis

Portage moved on in the SEMHL playoffs with 4-3 victory at home and a 2-0 series victory. They will now take on the Carman Beavers starting Tuesday, February 18th in Carman.

February 11, 2020 - Survivor Series - Notre Dame Hawks vs Portage Islanders

It's down to a best of three series between the Hawks and Islanders to see who moves on to take on the top seeded Carman Beavers in the SEMHL semis.

The Hawks/Islanders series will start Tuesday night in Notre Dame. Game two in Portage is set for Thursday, February 13th in the Portage Mutual Rink while game three, if necessary, is back in Notre Dame on Saturday night.

These teams haven't faced each other since mid-December so they will have to quickly renew acquaintances. Portage took the season series two games to one, taking the first two games and dropping the final game. Brian Michiels and Derrick Brooks led their respective teams with seven points in the season series. In net, the Islanders will be counting on Person (2-0, 3.50 GAA) to continue his winning ways over Notre Dame while Krahn (1-2, 4.67 GAA) will look to build on their last meeting where he held Portage to two goals.

In addition, the schedule for the Warren/Altona semi-final series has now been finalized and available in the Playoffs section at top of page.

February 7, 2020 - Playoffs Kick Off Tonight in Portage

The 2019-20 SEMHL playoffs start this weekend with the first of two survivor games being played tonight in Portage as Winkler comes to town. The winner of that game will wait on the result of Saturday's Morden/Notre Dame clash in Notre Dame to play the best of three Survivor Series. Make sure to come on out and support your team!

February 1, 2020 - Survivor Series To Start on Friday

The regular season has been completed and it's playoff time!

Starting it off is the Survivor Series with Winkler traveling to Portage on Friday night and then Morden heading to Notre Dame on Saturday night with the winner of each game moving on and the losers done.

January 27, 2020 - Top Three Ready To Sit Back and Watch Survivor Series

The regular season concludes this week with every playoff position still up in the air.

With Carman, Warren and Altona now guaranteed a spot of top three in the standings, the remaining four squads will begin to battle it out next week to see who moves onto the SEMHL semi-finals.

January 21, 2020 - Provincial Senior Championships Revamped

At the Hockey Manitoba meetings this past weekend, the format of the Senior Provincials was discussed and changed as follows:

January 18, 2020 - Update

Due to dangerous highway conditions throughout southern Manitoba, all of tonight's SEMHL games are canceled and will be rescheduled.

January 3, 2020 - Playoff Push Starts Tonight

With the Christmas break over and teams hopefully rested and healed, the SEMHL season continues tonight as Carman travels to Winkler.

The schedule will be busiest for Altona in this final month as they have nine games still to play. Notre Dame and Morden have a more relaxed schedule with only six games remaining. Every game will be important as teams jockey for playoff positions and look to finish somewhere in the top three, giving them a few days off while the survivor series games are played.

Make sure to come on out and support your team!

July 17, 2019 - Wayne Deschouwer Way - Street unveiling in Charleswood

The City of Winnipeg's official ceremony unveiling "Honorary Wayne Deschouwer Way" will be held next Wednesday July 24th at 2:30 pm at the corner of Oakdale Drive and Coy Avenue.

We all know what Wayne meant to our league and Senior leagues in Southern Manitoba and that it is only fitting that he make you all travel out to Charleswood one more time than you have to in a year..... We all know that he would have liked that.

Please feel free to extend this invitation out to anyone that you feel would want to a part of this ceremony as we know that Wayne would love to see as many old friends in attendance as possible.

We look forward to seeing you there!

May 20, 2019 - SEMHL Executive Returns For Another Season

At the league AGM on April 29th in Carman, league members voted to keep the current executive in place for the 2019-20 season. Congrats to league commissioner Tom Vatrt, Referee-in-Chief Brent Smart, and Statistician Ken Steen and thanks for stepping into those positions during a tough time for the SEMHL. Looking forward to 2019-2020! Only five more months.

April 29, 2019 - SEMHL Annual General Meeting

Another year has officially concluded in the SEMHL with the Annual General Meeting held last night in Carman.

A rule change that fans can look forward to is the change from a 4 on 4 overtime period in the regular season to a 3 on 3.

It was also agreed on to revisit the possibility of creating a balanced schedule by going to a 18 game schedule (3 games against each team) and a revised playoff format. These will be decided and voted on at the September Semi-Annual Meeting.

An updated Constitution will be available in the coming weeks.
